WIPANO funding program: Launched in 2016 by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), the WIPANO program supports universities, non-university research institutes as well as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in securing and protecting their intellectual property rights (IPR) and economic exploiting these IPR by involving competent tech transfer offices, such as BayPAT.
BayPAT advises SMEs on all matters relating to the protection and the subsequent commercialization of their inventions. The services are provided under the BMWi’s WIPANO funding program.
In addition to academic research institutes, access to the WIPANO program is open for all industrial SMEs and professionals with a background in the technical and scientific sectors, having their main place of business in Germany and which fulfil the criteria to be a valid SME, according to the applicable EU Directives (i.e., fewer than 250 employees, annual turnover not exceeding EUR 50 million or balance sheet total not exceeding EUR 43 million).
One additional criterion is that the applicant must not have applied for a patent or utility model during the past 5 years and must not have already started their project (e.g., given orders to an advisor or a patent attorney about the invention in question).
The roadmap to a commercialized patent consists of the following service packages (SPs):
The funding will be granted by way of non-refundable share-based financing. The grant amounts to 50% of eligible expenditures and is subject to a total upper limit of EUR 16,575. The funding period is limited to 24 months.
Applicants are advised to use the "easy-online" electronic application system.
BayPAT can provide advice and support for the application process.
